review 1: It dawned on me while tearing through this book how much I really enjoy Lev Grossman's writing. I love the sarcasm, the OMGs and the poignancy, the crossover between the real world and the fantasy, the subtle and unacknowledged pop culture references, the self-aware jadedness that only comes from being a young adult in today's modern world. A huge part of me wishes I could escape into the magical sub-world of The Magicians, but I know that even if I did, it would only be a matter of time before I started looking for the next fantasy.
review 2: This trilogy is very hard for me to rate. I loved the first half of the first book; didn't love the second half. The second book was fine, but as I often find with many second books in series, it wasn't as compelling as t
... morehe others. This last book was probably my favorite of the three - and yet, I found I'd put it down even in exciting parts. At one point, I found what I think the problem (for me) was: The narrator. Why did the narrator suddenly need to insert him/herself into the story? The narrator in all three books was quite snarky, and the snarkiness got more pronounced in each book. By this third book, the narrator actually called attention to him/herself by using first person while telling the story. It kind of stopped me cold and made me think about the narrator more than I think was necessary/helpful to the story. But even so, I really loved the overall story and would recommend the books to anyone who loves the Narnia and/or Harry Potter books. less
