The Magicians
review 1: The Magician Kings picked up right where the first volume The Magicians left off. It is more of the same escapist fiction but with a literary wit, modern day angst and over the top young adult self absorption. It is not recommended for pure sci fi fans nor for fans of speculative fiction. It is more for people who are looking for some escapist fiction that is intelligently crafted and has an edgy, modern day wit and sensibility. I loved this book as much as I loved the first and I am now headed back to my favourite Singapore library to get the next installment in this trilogy.
review 2: Okay, this one surprised me. I expected more regurgitated Narnia and fantasy porn (figurative, not literal). And there's that, but this book has so much more going on than th
... moree first in the series.First off, the pacing...it's great! While "The Magicians" rushed us through the years and experiences with too much tell and too little show for my liking, "The Magician's King" is a deeply satisfying, carefully constructed slow boiler with real meat. We're already "in," so Grossman's inventiveness can take root and blossom. Quentin's realtime narrative was compelling enough, but the fact that it alternated with Julia's backstory really worked for me.Furthermore, I sort of started to GET it...like, the whole reason a really smart guy with considerable writing chops would base his book series on other peoples' series (Lewis, Rowling). There's a deepening in that whole theme of listlessness and grasping at that which we cannot have. We love these worlds and let them take over our consciousness, losing what's in front of us. With the second book, you still get tons of allusions to other works, but it's got a purpose. It's more resonance than imitation. Classic hero cycle stuff.Really looking forward to reading the third book! less
