review 1: It's very difficult for me to review this book because I loved it so much. I cried my way through the entire book. I could relate a lot to Aysa and her plight. For me this is a book about not allowing the past dictate your future. Also not allowing yourself to settle. I love the way Lila writes and I love that her characters are very authentic, rounded people. While painful in a way for me to read I felt like I was on the outside and looking at myself through someone else's eyes. I cannot wait to see what becomes of Ezra and Aysa. I loved this book!!! I did not plan on it grabbing my heart the way it did, but here I am. Patiently waiting!!!
review 2: I really liked Lila Felix's AnguiSH so I decided to try this book authored by her also. She writes wonderfully
... moreflawed, quirky, loner-type characters you just feel so much for. But, nowhere, anywhere does the info on this book tell me its a CLIFFHANGER!!! And, #2 "Doves for Sale" hasn't been released yet. Excuse me while I scream!!!!!But, I was introduced to two of the quirkiest and loveable characters ever. Aysa is a loner, longing for the affection her mother never showed her, "touch deprived" as someone put it. When things get too bad she hides in a closed cabinet in her entertainment center invisible to the outside world. She has no real friends, she just blends into the scenery. We think Aysa is totally weird until we meet Ezra.Ezra is a handsome boy who in high school sweet talked a girl into sleeping with him. She got pregnant. She decided to give the child up for adoption against Ezra's wishes. One day driving his pregnant girlfriend home, Ezra's mind starts to wander thinking about the adoption and what he is going to do and he swerves off the road into a tree killing both the mother and child. He is consumed by their deaths. His whole life now revolves around thinking about them, thinking about the accident, becoming almost catatonic on the anniversary, going to confession with his brother, the priest, weekly to try and absolve himself and generally driving everyone around him crazy with his guilt and depression.Ezra and Aysa meet. Ezra knows that Aysa needs help and comfort and he thinks that by helping her he might absolve some of his own guilt. But in the end we find that Ezra needs a lot more help than Aysa ever did and Aysa realizes she has become Ezra's enabler and he would be better without her. They have fallen in love but must part.I really liked this book. It isn't really an easy read. You have to pay attention to what is going on and at times it seems a little tiring to keep dealing with these very broken people. At times you feel that Aysa is having her own pity party but then she can become so intuitive about both herself and Ezra it's scary.Damn, I wish Book #2 was out but I'll certainly be reading it when it is published. less
