review 1: The Christmas Visitor was a very enjoyable book to read. I like reading Amish stories, Christmas stories and romance stories so I got all three in this book! I loved every minute of it. :)The characters were all real to life people and I liked all of them. It was so nice to see how the Amish community comes together for each other. Seeing how the Amish celebrate the holidays was interesting to me. Throughout the book, the author would occasionally use Pennsylvania Dutch words and have the meaning in parentheses. I liked that and felt like I learned some new words. I highly recommend this book as a great Christmas story that is both inspiring and just plain fun to read!* I received a copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest re... moreview.
review 2: When I think of Amish people I think of no electricity, hard working people. The characters in this story lived in houses with electricity and shopped at WalMart. That's the first thing that bothered me about this book. It didn't seem true to how I think of Amish people. The book is only 130 pages but the story (and honestly there wasn't much of a story) was so rushed. You barely hear how Ruth loses her husband and how her and the children cope with it. I would've been a lot more interested in a coming together story. Then all of a sudden there's a single man in town and he and Ruth are in love and engaged, end of book! That's the second thing that bothered me about this book. There was hardly any interaction between the Ruth and John, how in the heck did they fall in love so fast! SPOILER ALERT! The Christmas Visitor (hence the title) was John. He would leave necessary items (food, etc.) for Ruth and her children since they were having a hard time without a husband to support the family. This line of the story should have been expanded quite a bit and I think I would have enjoyed it quite a bit more. The third thing I really disliked about this book was Ruth's constant put downs of her supposed best friend Mamie. Granted, she never out right said mean things to Mamie's face but it bugged me that she had such a low opinion of a woman she claimed to be her best friend.I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. less
