Sadie's Montana
review 1: This is my first Amish romance book in a genre I only learned about recently. It is written by an Amish woman, so you really get a sense of the every day life of the average Amish woman, of the philosophy they have over life and death, and of the relationship that families have. I never knew they had phones in little outside kiosks or that Amish could work for non-Amish. I learned about how the Amish date and how the young Amish entertain themselves, and I was even surprised to read that they can go to malls! Now for the romance/love story -- there are two guys, but this is NOT a love triangle, and how it works itself out is quite a tale, though not dramatic and twisty/turny the way it would be in a regency or Harlequin romance. I find Linda Byler's pacing acceptable an... mored actually refreshing. So Sadie has two love interests but it is so different from other kinds of romance novels -- I don't want to give away more, so you'll have to read it to find out about Ezra and Mark. The ending is satisfying enough with regard to the two romances she experiences, but this book has no passionate love scenes...as it IS an AMISH romance it should not. I found this refreshing. But here's the thing...I think this romance/love story is MORE about Sadie's love with the various horses in her life, Paris 1, Nevaeh, and Paris 2. I've read enough books on a boy's or girl's love for his/her horse to know that this is the core of what Sadie is really loving, and what her family has the hardest time understanding. I also think this is a love story about FAMILY -- how Sadie loves her family, and how she loves them enough to be bold and confrontational when the need arose. So....this is a horse book, a romance novel, and a cultural primer into the customs and thinking of the Amish to some extent. I particularly like that this book ends without ending...enough to want to read the sequel which in definitely out... I saw it when I bought this one. However, it also ends well enough to keep me satisfied until I can get the sequel. I am still wondering what the mystery is about Mark's background...I wish they have given us a little more info on that in the first book. That is really my only complaint.
review 2: I loved this story!Book 1 of Sadie's Montana was awesome. Linda Byler style of writing has such a wonderful flavor that you think you are sitting right next to the characters in the story. All of her books will just pull you in if you are a fan of Amish Fiction. Maybe it is that Linda Byler is Amish and therefor can tell it all so truly. Linda's books are not some bland filler of words (Not saying that today's top Amish Authors are like that) like some.I just thoroughly enjoy Linda's books and can not wait to read another one!! Wild Horses is a must read for the Amish Fiction fan. Enjoy!! less
