review 1: I've enjoyed all of Greenlaw's books (including her cookbook, where her black bean soup is now a regular in my rotation.) She is down-to-earth, honest and a likable woman, never mind she has made her mark in the male world of swordfshing. Set on her Maine Island, she shares her journey of becoming the guardian and parent to a teenage girl. Greenlaw is open and honest about her feelings, the life her daughter endured prior, and the love that has grown between them. A good story. (Only minus is that Greenlaw narrates the audiobook, and is not as smooth or polished as professional readers. She sounds like she is uncomfortable and reading someone else's book.)
review 2: After Ken and his niece Mariah came to live on Isle au Haut, Maine, Linda Greenlaw hired Mariah
... more to work on her lobster boat for the summer. Although she turned out to be a hard worker, Mariah was sullen and uncommunicative and did little to try to form relationships with anyone on the island. Eventually, after Mariah ran to a neighbor for safety when Ken was in a drunken rage, it came to light that Ken was also sexually abusing Mariah. When Ken was arrested, Mariah needed a home, and Linda Greenlaw reluctantly took her in, and became her legal guardian. Greenlaw’s subtitle is, “Notes from an Accidental Mother.” Gradually, Linda and Mariah come to trust each other and Mariah calls Linda Mom. I always enjoy Greenlaw’s books, whether she is off at sea fishing or at home on her island, less

Not the journey I thought it was going to be, but incredibly engaging nonetheless.

The story was fascinating but too much fishing detail for me.
