review 1: One of the most believable histories I've ever read in that the author was not shy about stating certain bits were conjecture or had been relayed differently elsewhere. Certainly does not paint a pretty picture of any monarchy or any man for that matter. The beginning appeared to be somewhat chronological and then it changes to topical creating. It seemed as some of the stories or characters were duplicated or re-told to fit the topics.
review 2: First of all, this author has an agenda, and she pushes it in a big way. She's hyper-focused on "heeeey, look at these bad girls! They are nothing like Disney princesses! They're scandalous! Did I mention how not-Disney these girls are?" That got on my nerves after a while. It's probably impossible to write a
... morebiography without any lens or angle whatsoever, but this particular angle got boring pretty quickly. Then again, I did power read my way through this book; maybe if I were only to read one or two entries a day, it'd be easier to swallow.Beyond the agenda, however, this was a really enjoyable book. My focus on history tends to be narrow and deep; when I find a historical figure I like, I go out and read everything about them I can, and become an armchair expert on them (examples: Cleopatra, Isabella of Castile and Leon, Katherine Swynford). But outside of my specific interests, I tend not to know very much, if anything. That's what I liked about this book; there were a whole slew of figures I had never heard of before. The book darts back and forth through time and cultures, grouping princesses together by deed (warriors, partiers, seductresses, etc.).All in all, this is a fun, rainy-day-with-a-cup-of-tea romp. less

How does that saying go? Ah, yeah! "Well-behaved women seldom make history." Wow.

Full of naughty tidbits of historical women. What more is there to love?

So boring and disjointed that I couldn't finish it.
