review 1: This is an earnest book which intertwines a love of art, the drive to be an artist, the nature of love and friendship, and what it is to be a hero. It is set mostly in the 1930s, in France and Germany, when the Holocaust was fomenting, as well as during its ugly aftermath. What I found intriguing is that many of the Jewish artists in the novel care less about their own lives than about saving their artworks, which they feel the Nazis are hellbent on destroying. The book also makes clear that no matter how wealthy or powerful, Europe's Jews could not escape the Nazis' sadistic wrath. Another interesting element, albeit secondary to the plot line, is family relationships. None of the main characters appears to have a good relationships with his or her parents, which leads to... more tragic tragic consequences.
review 2: LOVED this book! A young American artist rebels against his religion & goes to Paris to be able to paint & truly express himself. There he meets three other young artists & they fast become friends. Meeting them on his first day, he has no idea how it will change his life. Life goes on for them, while Hitler is doing his dirty work. This story tells about the Nazi's take-over of art considered "degenerate". Jealousy raises it ugly head between the friends, animosity, betrayals.Written so well! This young American artist goes through some horrible times trying to avenge himself & his one true friend. I didn't know how it could end, but the author did a great job. THOROUGHLY enjoyed this book! less
