review 1: A really enjoyable read- the main character's history as an Iraq war veteran both honors classic detective novels, and makes the setting fresh again. China itself also plays a role in the story beyond that of a merely passive stage into something like a character itself. It sounds like the novel draws upon a trend in Chinese fiction of similar "low life" stories- I can't wait to check some of them out, as well as the next book in this series.
review 2: oh I wish I could tell you waht the purpose of the wild goose chase was, but even when I finished the book I was still none the wiser as to what the drama was all about. Maybe this was because of some unfortunate timing with skim reading but I never understood the connection between the art dealers and the art
... moreist and the protagonist, but I'm sure there are others out there that can enlighten me. Overall I just found the book a little pointless and a little inconsistent with the storyline, I would have preferred more information about Ellies past but I suspect that it might come out in the next book. less
