review 1: I wanted to read Lisa Brackmann's book after hearing her speak. She has cleverly combined our current day fascination with all things Chinese, including a setting in Beijing and enough Chinese language to stir interest without interfering with understanding, the whole videogaming culture (as her heroine uses her avatar to pursue clues to a life-threatening mystery), and the many intrigues of the art world. A real page turner.
review 2: I read the second book in the series and this is the first one-it's much the same with a frazzled Ellie doing a walkabout all over China. It's another tour de China as Ellie chases ghosts in a virtual Second Life game all the while being chased by an American security corporation. Or is the Chinese Security Bureau after her too?
... moreSuits are always finding her in the remotest places. All this to help a friend who is just an artist. Her marriage is over and she's never quite sure who has her interests covered. It gets downright ugly-GITMO ugly, but she survives and ends up with a good gig. less
