review 1: The best part about this book is it's colourful subject. The titles says "intimate life" but I liked best the episodes that shed light on her business thinking. In my opinion this book would have been so much better with just 2/3 of its volume. I understand that the author has carried out extensive research and some facts are really interesting and she must have suffered a serious case of "itch to share". But to me there was a little bit too much of information of little relevance to the subject. In a way this book was really objective - I highly respect how the author has managed to keep the readers from making judgements and defining the subject too narrowly. On the other hand you could clearly see what the author would have wanted Coco to be. Although the author often emp... morehasised how everyone were to make their own conclusions based on the facts she has presented (and based on those she doesn't have or doesn't have confirmed). Yet it seems to me that she herself had fallen for the allure of the remarkable woman as her linguistics hint that the author believes that deep down (even when acting differently) Coco was a little hurt angel, always guided by noble values.
review 2: An absolutely fascinating woman. The author writes well and in detail about the changing social and political times that Gabrielle Chanel lived and worked in and carved for herself a distinctive place. This is more than just a book about pretty clothes, but is a fascinating look at Parisian society in the early half of the twentieth century. The author hasn't been able to completely dispel the Chanel myth, and whilst obviously very fond of her subject she doesn't shy away from describing Chanel's less-attractive qualities. So much more could have been written, but Lisa Chaney has made a very good start at viewing Gabrielle Chanel as a thoroughly modern woman in a changing world. less
