review 1: Read this because a friend saw Cron speak at a writers conference this summer, and I've heard good things about her workshops from several people. The book didn't really grab me. Not bad, but it took me a long time to read it. Lots of ideas I'd heard before (nothing wrong with that), some "well, duh, of course that" sections, some "oh, that's why that works so well" sections, and a few new ideas. Mostly pretty clear story structure stuff, hard to take the "neuroscience" aspect all the much to heart. Worth reading, but I thought it promised more than it delivered. BTW, can't find any evidence that Cron has ever published a novel.
review 2: Some very useful information. Brings a different perspective to why the fundamentals matter. Friends seem to acclaim
... more this book consistently. Can't disagree with them. Fact is, there are so many books on "How to Write" a good story, it's difficult to say something either new or more refreshing. Lisa Cron achieves that however with the neuroscience angle. I am impressed enough that I signed up for a UCLA Extension Course taught by the author by the same title. less
