review 1: Klein expands the play to tell the story of Albia, the daughter of Lady Macbeth and her husband, who, the author tells us, might have existed (the birth of daughters would usually have gone unrecorded). What if she had? What is her story? Deformed at birth, the baby is taken outside the castle walls to be left to die, but of course, the faithful lady's maid arranges for her rescue and Albia grows up amidst the three "witches," not knowing her true identity. Meanwhile, things are heating up politically and Macbeth, denied a living son, and itching to be King of Scotland, grows unbalanced and here the familiar story is bolstered by detail and the perspective of Grelach, Lady Macbeth. The play is bloody and depressing, and the book tends that way as well. Albia is a goo... mored heroine, with plenty of pluck, and the story ends on a redemptive, hopeful note. The great cover must also be mentioned. Readers should be basically familiar with the play before they pick this up. Upper junior high, high school.
review 2: Lisa Klein sure is a marvelous story teller, making the already appealing Shakespeare even greater. In Ophelia, I was captured by her writing prowess and riveted by the tale that she wove. I decided then to try her new book, Lady Macbeth's Daughter, and I wasn't disappointed. Lisa Klein took a Shakepseare play that I wasn't very familiar with, Macbeth, and turned into something that was able to capture my attention and increase my appreciation for Shakespeare, which is ever growing. By adding Albia into the story, Klein makes Macbeth her own. You can't help but like Albia, a strong young woman who has enough intelligence to only let her heart overcome her reason at the appropriate times. Overall, I was enthralled by Lady Macbeth's Daughter. less
