review 1: Couldn't decide whether to give this 3 or 4 stars. I enjoyed it for a while (stayed up till midnight one night), but lost interest near the end. If I'm judging it based on would I recommend it...yes. Its clean and good for a youth. But its so much like Twilight I couldn't believe it so I think that's what lost me in interest. The end is different and the main character isn't as annoying as Bella could be.
review 2: I finished this series several days ago and have been scratching my head over it since. In one way, this series was enjoyable, and in another way, I feel like it was a waste of time. The story became super predictable, there were some glaring, major, ugly problems with the time travel in both the first and second books (particularly when the pas
... moret is changed and why Dante's touch has consequences, but Zo's doesn't), and some deuce ex machina moments in the last that left me a bit bitter. Yes, it was some-what fast-paced and had some great rhythm to it, and it was a shortish read, but it certainly wasn't memorable. Characters: I would say they are predictable and a bit trite. You have the girl next door who is perfectly perfect, oh-so brave! and who finds she has super (unexplained) powers, the love interest who is supposed to be all sorts of swoon-worthy, dangerous and mysterious (but just wasn't), and the bad guy who is a power hungry maniac with no redeeming qualities. The only character I really got the feels for was Orlando, poor guy, and you don't even really meet him until book three. I do have to say that the resolution to his story *almost* made me cry. Some of secondary characters and ALL of the third-stringers were mere card board cutouts who essentially weren't important to the MC until five seconds before they disappeared. Major character problems here (I'm thinking of Abby's dad in particular). The story: This series had a ton of potential. The first book started out interesting and quickly devolved into a YA romance of the most banal variety. I would like to have seen the romance take a back seat to the time-traveling. But it didn't. Why? Oh, because romance sales! And teens don't want anything deeper in their fiction! Not. Buckle up for a stare that gets your heart racing, a smile that makes you melt, touches that set fire to your skin, and kisses that stop time. Ya, pretty cliche. If all of that was said in a literal rather than metaphorical sense it would have made for a much more interesting book. Besides the romance aspect, the story was actually really intriguing, until you get to the big reveal. I'll be honest, I was gearing up for Dante's origins and secret to be so much cooler than they were. But they weren't. Oh well. I liked the time travel thing until the author started bending and breaking her own rules. There were too many things left unexplained, too many consequences that didn't happen, and not enough thought put into the effect of changing time and being apart of the bank versus the river. The one super big downfall of this series is that it took itself so seriously. There were no light, humorous moments, there were no laugh-out-loud moments, it just wasn't fun. And because of that emotional lack, I couldn't feel like the rest of the emotions were real. Writers need to remember that anyone can fall in love, but it takes real lovers to be silly. How can I believe this relationship will, "last through time" as the tag line describes it, if it's emotionally lacking?Gees, I like it a lot less now that I've verbalized what was wrong with it. less
