review 1: The book is told from 3 points of view. 2 of them were interesting, heartbreaking characters. The third was so strange, so unbelievable, I just didn't care about her character. The story itself is a soap opera, 2 sisters bury their parents in the backyard after they die so that no one will know they're dead. That way they can keep the state from separating them. Details are left out as to how they survive as long as they do without someone caring for them until a neighbor finally starts to feed them. Once again, anyone with a Christian faith is made out to be psychotic or a hypocrite. So many bad things happen to Marnie, the main character, and yet she seems to overcome them all with very little problem. That is until her first crush breaks her heart, then she's practicall... morey comatose...really? The girl dragged her father's decaying corpse through the house and buried it in the garden, she had an long affair with a middle-aged man who dumped her, she's had an abortion, and I'm supposed to believe she falls comatose because a boy dumps her?
review 2: What a great little novel -- a fast read and totally engrossing, this story of two young sisters in Scotland, abused and neglected by their worthless parents, could have been dark and depressing, but O'Donnell gives the characters the ability to cope and overcome, with the help of a crazy cast of characters, the seemingly impossible life they've been stuck with, and gives the reader something funny, charming, and uplifting. less
