review 1: There is a phenomenon in fantasy novels where characters are super into talking about their genitals. It’s mostly men in reference to women, but things can get pretty bawdy pretty fast. This is feels especially out of place when I’m reading Young Adult. Mainly because they use such a language as to hint at it, but not actually say it. It’s the sixties pan away, whoopie talk of the fantasy genre.This novella was full of it. Just brimming with it. Whether it be because of the plot or because the characters think someone is hot, it started to get increasingly annoying. I understand that sex can be a magnificent motivator and easy way to get close to someone, but damn the flowery talk and yadayadayadas.The plot is just the song Mr. Brightside, but with revenge and then s... moreome grumpy usurpation. Nothing new to see here, the death of a not so girlfriend motivationally skyrockets someone into the top seat of an underground guild. Now where have I seen that before? Oh, yeah, Dr. Horrible.Despite being cliche, it was still a quick novella, showing the back story of James, an influential character in Livia Blackburne’s full length novel, Midnight Thief. It introduces the backdrop of Forge and the inner workings of its society and also gives a bit of insight into the author’s writing style. It didn’t make me more or less excited for Midnight Thief, but it was still a nice companion piece.
review 2: Oh Livia you are just a fantastic writer!!! Even a novella has given me so many emotions in such a short amount of time! This has made me see James in an entirely different light since I read Midnight Thief first. I think I will need to re-read it now just to see how I feel about him in the book with knowing all I do about him now. James and Thalia were such fascinating people to learn about and I only wish this could have been longer. IT WAS WAY TO SHORT FOR ME!!!GIVE ME MORE!!!!! less
