review 1: Read this book quickly - about a very large man, a boy who might be his son, and the boy's mother. It might have helped me understand men a little bit better, although the author is a woman! Anyway, I did enjoy reading this book - it wasn't really full of insights for me but it was a very enjoyable and rather unusual story. I so wanted (spoiler alert) the man and the boy to meet and by the last page, it looks like they will, but we have to imagine how that encounter might turn out. Would the boy (a gifted athlete) be grossed out by a 500 lb father figure who his mother loved. Or because of his mother's problems, would he be more accepting of this person? Maybe Liz Moore is going to continue the story (although it didn't feel like it).
review 2: Some books sneak... more up on you and surprise you. This is one of those books.Who would have thought that a book about a reclusive morbidly obese professor and a young promising high school baseball player would be so heartrending? Thankfully it doesn't fit the stereotypical "I'm a teacher and I'm going to inspire you as my students" mold. It more falls within the "these people are all sorts of effed up and somehow have a connection even though their stories seem unrelated". Its a story of loss and how we as humans deal with it. Its a story of hope and how it can be both marvelous and soul crushing at the same time. But overall its a story of finding a source of strength even in bad times. Honestly, its a really exquisite novel that's likely to be overlooked, but well worth reading. less
