January seems too early to declare a book a favorite of 2018, yet here we are. I gobbled down Iron Gold in a day and then was super sad when it was over. Basically, if you liked the original Red Rising trilogy I think you’ll really enjoy this one.
The book takes a little while to get going as it introduces several new POV characters in addition to Darrow. However once everyone has been introduced the book picks up, moving along at the break neck speed we’re used to from this series. And don’t worry, even with the addition of the new characters, there’s plenty of face time for old favorites as well. Although I wasn’t original too excited by the idea of new POVs I think they really were necessary, not only for plot reasons, but because Darrow is in a pretty dark place (when is he not lol) and the alternating POVs keeps the narrative from getting dragged down by his brooding.
**Sidenote: If you have time, I would definitely suggest rereading the previous books or even just Morning Star before starting on this one. There are so many characters and plot points, a little refresher will help enjoy the book even more- although I didn’t reread before starting Iron Gold and I still really enjoyed it**
I think Pierce Brown does a really good job at exploring the complexities of trying to rebuild a society pretty much from scratch. As you can imagine, it’s a complicated process and he doesn’t skirt away from those complexities. And as always, the characters reside in lovely shades of grey when it comes to morality, each abiding by their own code and doing what they think best, never hampered in by a black and white paradigm of right and wrong. Though it started a little slow, I definitely enjoyed Iron Gold and I’m curious to hear what you all think once you’ve read it!
Are you planning to pick up Iron Gold? Are there any characters you’re especially excited to see again?
