review 1: Lily’s family have owned a silk factory in England for many generations. After graduation, she works in the factory as a novice, eventually becoming a weaver. World War II becomes a reality which results in many changes in both their business and personal lives. Their factory’s main production changes to making parachute silk. Although I had decided not to read any more books about World War II, I found this book very interesting. I was fascinated by the history of silk and how it was made during the 1930’s and 1940’s. There was also a mention of Kindertransport and the “rescue” of Jewish children from Germany during the war. Although this book is a novel, it is influenced by the history of the author’s family which still owns a three hundred year ol... mored silk factory in England and how their factory survived through the war years.
review 2: This is probably more of a 3.5 stars for me. I found the actual storyline more intriguing than the characters. I must be really into WWII historical fiction lately, since that appears what I enjoy reading lately. I found the whole aspect of the silk factory really interesting. The whole love story found between a German and the daughter of the head factory owner not really new, but there were some different themes I was attracted to. Overall, the decision the main character Lily made in regards to sending faulty silk was one that made me think if I could do it or not and the pressures of people to perform in business and life. Enjoyable read, but more for story not for characters. less
