SO many people have complained about the pacing of this book. I honestly can’t understand why. I didn’t have a problem with the pacing at all. In fact, this is up there with City of Glass for my favourite Mortal Instruments book.

What I Liked:

  • Magnus
  • The variety of subplots. We get to spend so much more time following the exploits of Simon, Izzy, Alec, and Magnus in this book. I loved it. I love the dynamics between all of them, I loved seeing them work as a team, I loved their subplot and the adventures they had to go on. More of this please, Cassandra!
  • The climax. I was thoroughly drawn into the climax of City of Lost Souls. Even though I knew from the beginning that *SPOILERS* Jace was possessed by Sebastian, I still enjoyed seeing how it resolved. There was also a particular moment towards the end where I literally squeaked in distress, and another where I full on cried and had to google spoiler myself because I couldn’t bear not knowing.
  • The complexity. For the first time, I felt like this book really dealt with the complexity of people. In particular, Alec and Jace were put in really difficult situations and, sometimes, they made the wrong choice. It was refreshing to not have everything so black and white, even if it did break my heart sometimes. Sebastian was also portrayed really cleverly, and definitely far more complexly than Valentine was.

What I Didn’t Like:

  • Camille. I’ve never liked Camille. Not since she showed up in Clockwork Angel. I like her even less now. She’s the worst.

I can’t quite explain why, but I just loved this book. I was thoroughly emotionally invested, I was tense, and I can’t wait to read City of Heavenly Fire!
