review 1: I really enjoyed this book and feel it is a good intro to Buddhism for those of us interested in how we can apply it directly to our everyday lives (eg work, social life, money, etc.) The content covers a wide range so he doesn't get really in depth with most topics. But weaves in themes of compassion, kindness, coming back to the present moment, mindfulness, and other pillars of Buddhism throughout the book. With that, some parts do feel repetitive and drag on a tiny bit. What I like about how he presents advice and principles is that he does it lightly and not with a "you HAVE to do this" mentality but more of a "see for yourself" attitude - just as the Buddha himself did. I've read some reviews bashing Rinzler that he is making getting drunk and having one night stands... more and tattoos and piercings totally okay while still being a Buddhist - that is not what he is saying at all! What he is saying is to find out for yourself, but though a path of wakefulness. Buddhism is non secular and hence not a religion. So he's using this approach so not to turn it into dogma. Complaints about this book not being "real" Buddhism or not aligning with what the Buddha said and did is totally beside the point. This book shouldn't be taken as how good one can be by being a good Buddhist, but how good one can be by applying these practices into our experience. That's my understanding, anyway.
review 2: I think it would do wonders for the world if everyone read this book. The thing I most took from the book is that it serves as a reminder of a better way to live life, to slow down and just be present. Don't assume you know what people are going through and in turn, be patient and compassionate. I found myself agreeing with most of Rinzler's points and I thought the book was fantastic. I'll definitely be suggesting it to others to read. less
