review 1: This book. Ah, this book. I wish I had written the review when I was about 30 minutes away from finishing the audiobook. Might have been a more general, more accurate book review. Instead, I just have to say that the ending of this book was the most satisfying cry I've had in a year. I'll leave it at that to avoid spoilers, but wow. I'm still in awe of the way the author built up to that ending over the course of what -16? 18 books? It was masterful. This book marked the first time I remember Bujold writing from the perspective of a child, I found her child-perspective sections to be spot-on in terms of the way a child thinks about the world. Too often writers choose child points of view and then do not alter their overall storytelling style to adjust for the interests and... more concerns of a child. Bujold does not make that mistake. In addition to the child's point of view, we also see more from Roic's POV, which I enjoyed quite a lot. This story structure is mostly a whodunnit mystery style, but with all the nifty science fiction elements of cryofreezing as a method of life extension that you can imagine. Plot twists and unlikely daring last-minute rescues are all par for the course. Excellent read, excellent listen, and the ending destroyed me in a good way.

I made the mistake of reading two of these in a row and they ruined me for other books for a while. I'm also sad because it looks like I'm coming to the end of them. There needs must be more. This is pretty standard Miles as saviour fare, but I like that she deals with some of the politics of death and plays with viewpoint characters. The worldbuilding is nice too, as this is a previously unexplored planet in her series.

This book almost made me cry at the end. I definately have Vorkosigan withdrawl.
