review 1: The entire time I was reading this, I thought the story was odd, but apparently, I'm alone on this one. I could not understand why this story got such sparkling reviews. For the first 30% of the novella! there was almost no dialogue and I wondered what the heck was going on. Then, there were gaping holes regarding all of the hero's past addictions (sex and opiates) which were not explained at all. Then, the big revaluation of his illness was strange (because it's common) and very predictable. The hero and the heroine were barely together at all during the story and overall (if you couldn't tell) I just didn't like it. I finished it and it was a complete story so it gets 2 stars, but otherwise not much more than that. I won't try too hard to read this author in the fu... moreture.
review 2: A novella with a dark pitch, a kind of Wuthering Heights kind of connection to the shadowy moors and the sense of doom that comes from a deeply held belief by the earl that he is headed for a disastrous death just like his mother. It is a very good read and packs lots into its shortened length. The heroine is a plucky lady who has been dismissed by society as being unworthy of her desires--to be a legitimate healer and medical doctor. So there's lots going on in this novel so don't sell it short. It's most definitely a worthy read and a very engaging story. less

What a lovely story! Poignant and heart rending at times. Beautiful and triumphant at the end!

The reason why it's 5 stars is because I have read it many times before this.

I really liked these characters and wish they'd had a whole book!
