review 1: -Possible spoilers- Whenever I pick up a Lori Copeland book, I know I won't be disappointed. And I wasn't! I was intrigued by this book's premise: 3 swindling sisters are separated during an attack on their wagon and carried to safety by 3 different men. This book is about the middle sister, Abigail, who is matched with a bumbling shoe-salesman named Hershall (who turns out to be a Confederate captain in disguise). I could totally picture the scenes where they were trying to set up camp like it was from a comedy movie---Hershall trying, but failing, to start a fire, set up the tent, etc...all while trying to keep his bowler hat from flying away and Abigail being forced to sit and pretend to encourage him but knowing she could do it better and faster. I thought the interact... moreions between the characters were funny. Both characters grow during their journey, especially while caring for an orphan baby. One thing I didn't like was how Abigail seemed to encourage a lieutenant's attentions at the Confederate camp (even kissing him) if she liked Barrett so much. Also, I didn't feel that a clear explanation was given as to why Barrett kept calling for his deceased wife when he was sick if he didn't have feelings for her anymore. I'd be upset if I were Abigail, too! Overall, I enjoyed this book and it made me laugh out loud. I can't wait for the other sisters' stories, especially Anne-Marie.
review 2: A good book by a great author. I finished it in one evening. It is one of those books (for me) that is great read before bed. A bit adventurous and funny, but soothing and some-what predictable so as not to create tension or over-thinking on my part. A woman creating trouble. A man who tries to rescue her. She irritates him to no end. He can not get rid of her fast enough. They finally agree on a plan, as they are forced to stay together. There are some major hitches along the way and despite her dislike of him, she saves the day. She falls for him. He falls for her. They can't get on the same page. Finally both realize they are in love with each other and everyone lives happily ever after :-) That is the general outline...you have to read the book yourself to get all the good details! This is a pretty clean book, PG-PG 13 I would say. I hope this will be a series so I can see what happens next and to the other characters in the story! less
