review 1: Blah. I saw this on the library shelf and saw that the author was a PEN/Faulkner finalist (for a different book). Main character was on a spirituality quest AND an ESL teacher AND Latina. Thought I would love it, but truly did not care one iota for the main character and thought the other characters were one-dimensional. Gave it 2 stars instead of 1 just because some of the Spanglish made me laugh and I related to some of the ESL classroom moments.
review 2: I thought this book was ok. I really liked the ending, and I became more and more enamored with the characters in the book the further I read. But this book suffered from something similar to what I thought Jody Gehrman's novel Tart suffered from--an obnoxious narrator. Both these books featured know... more-it-all narrators whose attitudes really annoyed me. And while there is some growth out of this know-it-all attitude, there's not enough. less
