review 1: For the most part I enjoyed this book but was disappointed in the ending. The family mystery that the sisters are seeking to unravel fizzles and leaves the reader hanging. While the mystery was really no mystery, the details are not spelled out clearly in the end, and it's not clear what their parents knew, and why the truth was kept from them. Still, the characters are interesting, the writing good, and I was compelled to continue. The side story of the life of Fermina, told by means of interviews done for the WPA writer's project) is especially informative from a historic standpoint as well as emotionally touching.
review 2: I was given this book at Christmas. It had a tag on it sating "Bargain Priced". No wonder. A story taking place from 1966 to 1987
... moreof four sisters who lost their mother and had to deal with growing up on their own. I would have run away the way they talked to each other. They had had an old Pueblo taretaker living with them who also died but had told them she had given each a gift. The gifts emerge as problematic most of the time until they finally know who they are in life. I just couldn't take to them at all. less

This book read like bad young adult fiction. I gave it 50 pages and put it down.
