review 1: This is a great collection of eight stories that seem mostly focused on relationships. I have to admit that since getting on Goodreads I have a habit of thinking about what rating I'll be giving soon after starting a book. After the first couple of stories I was thinking it'd be 3 or 4 stars. When I got to the 5th story, Wings, I threw that idea out the window. That one alone is worth 5 but the last four seemed to get better and better. These were intense stories told with perfectly poetic language and keen insight into our human conditions. Some of the topics included a musician couple in an uneven relationship, a mother whose partner tries to help with her severely mentally ill son, and a country wedding interrupted, beautifully and absurdly, by a biker gang. I'm t... moreempted to reread the whole thing but I have so many other books waiting to be read. Now, I have to make sure Birds of America is on my To-Read list.
review 2: Meh. Probably should have started with another one of her books, but, well, this is the one I had. There were moments, but those moments weren't enough to keep me from trailing off and away from the stories. Something about people having dinner and having relationship woes, etc. has just been done too much for me to not want more if you're going to go that route. And I know, she's a goddess of literature and all, but, well, this was my feeling with this particular book. I suspect it to be not her at her best. less

I thought these short stories were a sad commentary on modern society.

Fine. Not half as funny as it thinks it is.
