review 1: This novel is certainly a worthy read. Perhaps the best way I can describe it and pay it its due is to say it is one of the weirdest, most wonderful stories I've read in quite awhile. It has many interesting themes all combined in a wonderful concoction very similar to the culture of the city in which the novel is set. The plot concerns a motley group of characters journeying to adulthood with a heavy dose of magical realism revolving around a story of murder, supernatural possession, and the invention of a uniquely American creation called Jazz. Great writing style, quirky characters, and an intriguing story. I definitely recommend giving it a try.
review 2: Brilliant. This has to be one of the most underrated novels of the past decade, and its prose res
... moreonates with poetry, much in the same way that Morrison's 'Beloved' does. It is somewhat surprising that it was not more successful.I was initially attracted by the title, which is very intriguing, and from the first pages fell under the spell of the language. The characters are intimately melded to their environment which is itself suffused with spirituality. This is probably my favorite read of 2012. less
