review 1: This book fell dead center for me. On the one hand, there is some excellent prose and world building that is really well presented and maintained over the course of the narrative. A lot of the book is fresh and unexpected and there are some distinctly neat gems to be found here.On the other hand, the plot is unfortunately not nearly as engaging as it initially suggested it might be and none of the characters ever get a proper fleshing out. The plot itself is actually fairly simple and pleasantly straightforward - something I prefer in urban fantasy - but it feels like there are a lot of holes where the characters and conflict should have (and needed to be) developed further for the climax to truly work. Jessie is obnoxiously bland, a very run of the mill, wish fulfillment,... more twenty something punk badass who never really convinced me to care about her. Her dialogue is quick fire and snide - the kind that grates on you and comes across as pompous unless you really like the main character and they have earned the right to Wheedon-speack. None of the supporting characters are anything worth commenting on - many of them act and speak in ways that are barely distinguishable from Jessie herself. Pal is a fairly bland and predictable mentor character who is good for exposition, and Cooper is so quickly swallowed up by a hell vortex that we're never quite sure why it is Jessie likes him beyond how much they frequently (and publicly) have sex. As a result, when the crux of the book comes down to whether or not Jessie can rescue her tormented lover from hell, it fails to give its audience much reason to care beyond the simple reason that the narrative requires it to be so.This book got three stars from me because it really is well written and there is definitely good stuff to be found if you can sit through the whole thing. I nearly put it aside a few times, but it was at least enough to satisfy my curiosity to keep going. Unfortunately, none of the characters comes anywhere close to carrying the dramatic weight of the book and it's entirely likely that most people will find Jessie and Co more than a little insufferable. The plot suffers because I couldn't be made to care about them and that is ultimately holding me from actively pursuing the sequel.
review 2: At first I wasn't sure about this book. It sounded interesting but wasn't extraordinary. Now that I've read the whole thing, I will recommend it to anybody. It's an excellent read! The first half (the setup) was slightly slow but in the end that worked out because the reader already knew all of the information and didn't have to be told anything again. I loved the outcome of the book and will seek out the next one in the series! less
