review 1: Lara grew up in the 1970s, at the height of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, with a surgeon father who divided his time between helping those affected in NI and his home with them in London. After his death she learns that this is not the whole truth. It was not his work that kept him in Northern Ireland for long periods of time but his other family, his wife and children. This novel follows Lara as she tries to come to terms with the fact that her mother was a mistress and she and her brother the illegitimate children of that clandestine relationship. This was well written and thought provoking and my heart broke just a little for Lara and her mother and brother.
review 2: A moving, well-crafted novel about family and betrayal, which more than lives up to its
... more poetic title. While taking a creative writing class, a woman faces up to her past - her father, who died years before, was already married with another family. Author Lucy Caldwell looks at the nature of loss and the possibility of redemption. It is also a meditation on the power of writing, and the story has some parallels to Jane Eyre. less
