review 1: A nice "light read." Books about dogs are my guilty pleasure for reading in between the "heavier" books that I pick up. The story's a good one, set in England, about a young woman grieving the loss of her young husband. Nearly catatonic with grief, she is pushed to get out into the real world when her mom convinces her to walk the mom's dog along with her own dog. The dog walking turns into a regular job with several clients and helps Juliet, the protagonist, rejoin life.
review 2: (3.5 stars) Juliet is still reeling from her husband's unexpected death. She is left in the midst of a massive renovation project on their half of a duplex, with little income other than the life insurance payout after losing her knack for baking in her work for a catering company. C
... morehaos reigns next door from the large family who lives there. She does have a support system in her dog Minton (named by her husband so he could say Bad Minton), her parents, and her sister. Her sister has her own struggles in going back to work after the birth of her son. While she initially wanted to stay home, both financial and other pressures push her back into the legal profession. Juliet is pushed into walking her mother's dog so that the dog is not around while she is babysitting, and this accumulates into Juliet being an unofficial dog walker/pet sitter. A problem in her house introduces her to one of her neighbors, Lorcan, who is a friend of the family and helps out when the father is on the road with his rock bands. Lorcan is a contractor and offers to help Juliet with her remodeling, doing it piece by piece to help with her budget. Her family also secretly helps out with the costs. As Juliet slowly comes out of her grief, she begins a relationship with one of her dog walking clients, but this ends up having some major unintended consequences. The story is a nice portrayal of a woman coming out from grief and putting her life back together. less
