review 2: (listening to book on cd)George’s Cosmic Treasure Hunt is the second book by Lucy Hawking and her
... morebrilliant father, Professor Stephen Hawking. This wonderful work of science fiction invites the reader into a world of adventure, suspense and learning. George, the protagonist, is off for another adventure in the solar system with his friend Annie. They are off to save the world after discovering clues from aliens, or are they? To travel the universe they get help from their super smart computer, Cosmos, who was created by Annie’s scientist Dad. The children enter portals and are transported to Mars, Titan, and more in search of clues to find other life forms. Not only is this book a fun adventure read, but it is filled with facts about the universe. Stephen Hawking and other scientists write non-fiction essays about topics such as “Is there life out there?” and “Manned Spaceflight.” Also, there are awesome photographs to support the facts shared in the non-fiction portion of the story. Although this text is science fiction, the facts woven into the story and throughout chapters make this book an excellent choice for the classroom. It can be used as a read-aloud to support a solar system unit, but for 4-6th grades due to the heavy content. I listened to this on CD. The reader did a wonderful job, but I found myself following along with the book. The illustrations and photos are an important component to its success. less
