review 1: Dit is één van de betere verhalenbundels die ik in het afgelopen jaar gelezen heb. Genoeg reden om me eens te gaan verdiepen in de hedendaagse Russische literaruur, en dan met name in vrouwelijke auteurs. Dit schijnt namelijk een genre op zich te zijn. Deze bundel smaakt naar meer. Nuchter, pakkend en met een flinke dosis zwarte humor beschrijft deze auteur de sombere alledaagse levens van Russische vrouwen en hun gezinnen. De stijl deed mij hier en daar denken aan die van Milan Kundera in zijn boek Afscheidswals. Een groter compliment bestaat er niet, wat mij betreft. Een echte aanrader!
review 2: 3.5 stars. Spare and straightforward, these stories remind me of fairy tales in the Grimm Brothers vein. Even the "happy" endings aren't decisively positive but ra... morether leave questions about the fate of the characters. Most of the stories are bleak and unsentimental; characters make bad choices (and suffer the consequences) but have no choice but to push on and make the best of their circumstances. There is dark humor here, and definite talent, but something was missing for me. I felt like the stories only skimmed the surface of the characters and the real tragedies at play. less
