review 1: I finished this book a few days ago. It was a 3 star read for me. The book started off very strong for me. I loved young David so much. I was disappointed when the book jumped to an adult David. i felt so much was left out of the story. I wanted to know how David felt when they were trying to lift the curse. Why was Todd immune to the curse? Couldn't that tell them how to cure it? Why did Todd decide to live with David? And why did they live in a run down house? That made no sense to me.The crime plot was incomplete as well. So much was missing from Cole's story. Who was his father? What was in the letter from his great aunt that changed his outlook on life and attitude? Did he stay in touch with the guys?I wanted to know more about Vaughn's background. I think Vaughn and ... moreDavid were great for each other, but something was missing. The story felt rushed at times, especially at the end. I also think the storyline or plot was missing several sentences. It just felt disjointed in spots. Don't get me wrong. This was a good book, it could have been even better. This was my first book by this author and it won't be my last.
review 2: This book was so much fun, which is great because it was a sad story. I know that sounds like a contradiction, but it’s true. This was a wonderful love story full of magic, curses, blessings and sacrifice.David was as alone as you can get while still being surrounded by people. His magical strength lies in blessings and his brothers lies in curses. One silly childhood fight caused twenty years of isolation and constant fear and dread, for everyone. He was 8 years old when it happened and it hurt even his mother to touch him. My heart broke for him. I understood his prickly ways and his fear of allowing anyone close to him.He couldn’t understand why Vaughn would want to be with him. David can’t believe he is anything more than a puzzle to be solved to Vaughn. Luckily, Vaughn is as persistent as he is charming and sexy.Vaughn hasn’t had an easy life himself. He takes one look at David and is hooked. The more time he spends with David, the deeper he falls. All he has to do is convince the man who hasn’t been touched by anyone, except his brother, in twenty years that he is serious. It was beautiful.Vaughn’s inexhaustible patience and compassion for David were amazing. He was so sensitive to David’s needs and fears. While he was willing to go at David’s pace, Vaughn knew what he wanted and he would not be moved. It was great when David finally realized that he was all that Vaughn wanted. There were so many things that I enjoyed about this book. It had heart, charm, devotion, mystery, a bit of angst, sweetness, and two beautiful men falling in love. I loved it.Reviewed by Nina less
