review 1: A boring book. While buying the book, i read Shobha De's comment for the book as 'Spunky and vivid' and got carried away with it. First off, there is nothing spunky about the character and secondly it did not had the colours to impress the reader. I do not personally understand characters like Kaveri. She initially looked more like a teenage young girl who wanted to experience sex and behaves stupid in forgiving Arjun for all his acts. In-spite of the clear intention of Arjun of not marrying Kaveri, she still gives him the space in her life. I do not say that this may be unusual, , but this certainly does not set a good example of a bold or a spunky women. Apart from the characters portrayed, the story itself was also quite a regular one. There was nothing interesting abou... moret it.The only message taken from this book is that its not the age which determines the maturity but its the experience that life makes you to go through.
review 2: Disappointed with this work, but largely due to my own hopes being thwarted in the course of the story. The author began with a very reserved indian woman, who matured into a sexually "liberated" and independent westernized female. One of the values I have most come to admire about the east is the value placed on interdependence of people within the structure of family, but I found this book investigated and celebrated the enlightenment independence of the west. The quote "Love is far more important than the person" epitomized the culmination of this acceptance in the book, our personal independence (realized by the protagonist's ideal of love and its outworkings in her life) has lead to the death of any sacrificial care for those around us.Yes, I know its a romance novel showing many aspects of the cultural challenges faced by Indian females, but as literature it also says something about where India is going. My hope is that Indian culture retains a strong interdependence, while asserting and embracing the necessary elements of independence that will enable its people to truly express themselves without selfishly hurting others by the expression of that independence. less
