review 1: Having mixed feelings about this book as I read it. On one hand, it's got a typical ostracised-boy-looking-for-love storyline that I enjoy (and relate to), on the other, I get that the author probably wants to portray Lucas as a sensitive, artsy teen but hell.. he cries almost ALL THE TIME and over EVERYTHING, which gets really annoying really quickly. Hell, I was bullied and just as lost at his age and it just doesn't feel believable. Will continue to read on although with outloud exclamations of "Oh come ON!" just because I want to know how the story goes and how it ends.
review 2: I enjoyed this coming of age story despite the fact that it reminded me of my own high school horrors of being different and not fitting in. My heart broke for Lucas so many times.
... more But although his sensitive character and naivety were very sweet, I sometimes just wanted to shake him to get him to stand up for himself and stop crying so much. His passion for music was one of my favorite parts of the book though. It was wonderfully written. I also liked his family (even Mason). They were not always supportive as they came to terms with Lucas’ gayness, but you still saw the love. Zach of course is the dream boyfriend, poetic, athletic and perfect for Lucas who needs someone confident and kind to help him out of his shell. Trish and Alex were also great characters. I would read more from this author. 4.5 stars less
