review 1: I have just discovered Maggie O'Farrell, and I think I've found my new favorite author. This book about family and the relationships among its members was one I couldn't put down. O'Farrell's rich use of language and description had me stopping to reread passages just for the sheer beauty of her writing. She knows how to create real characters and, despite their flaws, I was drawn to them and found myself cheering them on. The plot took an unexpected turn towards the end, that shook the family to its roots. They are forced to view things through a completely new lens, and are forced to evaluate their own life choices as a result. Not all find happy endings, but overall life is improved. I shall be reading more of Maggie O'Farrell.
review 2: A bit of an odd one,
... more but that's unsurprising as it was nominated for awards (they always go to the confusing slightly weird books). I think I enjoyed it, yet it felt to me as though there was not much point to the storylines. For example, we learnt a bit about Monica's past and her current marriage and her frustrations about certain things to do with her husband and step-children, yet nothing was done on that front. less

This book was ok but a bit slow in parts. Was not happy with the way it ended.
