review 1: I read the last book of the series, “The Unsuitable Secretary”, first and was pleasantly surprised by the writing, unusual storyline and strong characters. This book, the first in the series, was just OK. Louisa is a great heiress who at a tender age of 4 was put under guardianship of her overbearing and cold aunt. As soon as she could, Louisa escaped “The Golden Cage”, left her estate in the hands of her aunt and departed on the big tour of the Continent. To make it all proper, she invented an imaginary husband. Now, coming back home to check on some bank irregularities, Louisa needs to find someone who can masquerade as her husband. Our hero, Charles Cooper, injured veteran of the Boer War is suffering from PTSD. He couldn’t be more different form Louisa’s im... moreaginary husband but Charles stepped in in the role beautifully. There are humorous and angst moments in the story that are done well but many conflicts that carried the story resolved too simplistically.
review 2: My first exposure to this author and a pretty good first experience. This is a different era for HEA fiction than I usually read, we're at the turn of the 20th century when a woman's right to vote and motorcars are on everyone's mind. The cheat on the cover is a mansion that looks like Downton Abbey and we also get that in the cover blurb, it's just a tease to get you to buy.Louisa has a fabulous husband, Maximillan who is perfect for the high spirited heiress and would even please her stuffy, controlling aunt and family. Turns out Max is a product of her imagination and now that Louisa has to return home she needs a man by her side. Louisa turns to the Evensong Agency, well known for solving unusual staffing problems and is matched with Charles, a bitter down on his luck veteran of the Boer War.He agrees to pose as Max for the money and the chance to do some good. Then someone tries to kill Louisa's husband and he sees that his poor little rich girl has had a tough time. You learn a lot about the Boer War in this and there's some interesting twists, nothing too mind boggling. A satisfying end and the next book is already on my want to read list. less

Okay, if Caz, Miranda, and Janga all love it, I'll have to give it a try.
