review 1: A Bookcrossing book! It was interesting to compare the perspectives in this memoir to the only other traveller portrayals I've known: the one episode of House and the 'reality' series with Gypsy weddings and the like. The structure of the book wasn't always clear and the stories were sometimes repetitive. However I learned a lot and found it an interesting family history, like looking in a family photo album and asking about the people in the pictures. Recommended for the content, not the style or structure!
review 2: Maggie does a great job at giving everyday details to make you feel like you are part of her life as a Traveller. The details never bog down the story, and it shifts smoothly from the day-to-day to a broader picture of how life for Romani has ch
... moreanged over time, which lets her accomplish two different goals. She makes you feel like you were there at the same time as giving a historical and legal big picture. I'm tempted to give it more stars, because it accomplishes these two goals so well, but I'm sticking with three because there was very little to make me emotionally attached to the book. E.g., no drama, or especially beautiful language or characters you'd get attached to (though I did like her parents). But it's a great book for just looking through someone else's eyes, which is interesting in and of itself. less
