review 1: What made this different from so many other girl-power, fantasy YA books is that the heroine has a brain and uses it. She doesn't just magically find the solution or happen upon the answer, she puzzles it out. She also uses her skills but those too, she has to work at, like playing the harp. She has to practice to maintain her level of play. The realism made the book seem that much more legitimate. I liked the story....and without giving anything away, I liked the realism there too.
review 2: I picked up Lament because I am seriously enjoying the raven boys and was hoping for a similar reading experience with this novel, though I was also wary because I had read the first of Maggie's werewolf series (Shiver) which was a horrific mess to get through, and unf
... moreortunately Lament slides neatly along next to it. I couldn't even finish this one, which at least gives some points back to Shiver, although I only finished that one because of my endless love for werewolves. If you're looking for a good series about fairies, read Holly Black's series. This book was so impossible to get into because it felt like I had missed a prior book. Characters were introduced at random and discussed events and general knowledge as if the reader was supposed to be previously aware of anything. Deidre had the personality of mayonnaise but that's more than her 'love interest' Luke who had the personality of bread crumbs. The chemistry between them both was also SHOCKINGLY awful. The romance literally springs out of left field after an hour of them speaking to one another, literally. Then the plot moved at a glACIAL speed. I got at least 150 pages in and nothing had happened. This book is 300 pages long. There is slow build and then there is messing around. I had to finally call it quits when James, the protags 'quirky' best friend who wears t-shirts with slogans on them (something that is a warning sign to everyone in the area that the person in question substitutes actual personality for their tshirt), confessed he was also in love with Deidre. I finally had to throw the book down in disgust because BORING. BORING AND REPETITIVE. I will never get the appeal behind love triangles, especially when its between three different types of heterosexual egg. Seriously, read Tithe. less
