review 1: The premise and promise of the book drew me in, a collection of short stories, some crafted from a common prompt, featuring comments made by the authors to delight readers and show some of the background behind the writing. The stories were great, and the remarks were funny and relevant, but I wished these comments appeared more often then they did. I wanted conversations in the margins, for the authors to discuss techniques and thoughts behind the stories, for the pages to be marked all over. As for the stories created from a common prompt: I could kind of figure out the origin point, but I wished it was explicitly stated somewhere in the book what caused the creation of these stories. Even if the book did not go as in depth into the story-telling process as I would of l... moreiked, I still enjoyed the variety and the craft of the writing.
review 2: I'm usually not a reader of short stories but I enjoyed the commentary by each of the authors on their craft and process - it is always interesting to see how writers work and think and create. Many of the stories left me wanting a fuller exploration of the plot and/or characters, which was not what I expected. Overall, this is a great way to see how authors use different devices to create a variety of characters, settings, moods and tones. less
