review 1: This is only his first novel?I'm already waiting for him to publish new books!Rooftops in Tehran revolves around two Iranian boys, Pashta and Ahmed, in their late teens and in which you see their life unfold from Pasha's rooftop. Reading about Persian culture was interesting and refreshing . Pashta is admirably intelligent, knowledgeable and has a way with words. His best friend Ahmed is hilarious and loyal and one of the shining stars of the book. All the characters had so much personality, depth, and emotion. The romance was sweet and enjoyable, before a tragedy occurred. It also revolves heavily around politics during the power and rule of the Shah, and the community where Pashta lives in all oathe the Shah and government. Pashta's loved ones were imprisoned, tortur... moreed, and a few even killed for their actively opposing the Shah. There's an underlying theme of revolution. And imminently, there's a sad, shocking twist in it. I wish I got to see Pashta's college life in the U.S, but at least it was hinted what the future held in store for Ahmed and Pashta!
review 2: An interesting glimpse into the daily lives of people living in a nation rich in culture and diverse in history. Sometimes the writer assumes a knowledge of this history and background and merely refers to/ hints at political or religious circumstances which made me feel that a thirst was left unquenched. At the same time some things were being overemphasized and explained. The romantic storyline was too sugar sweet to feel real to me so where I felt unquenched in one area I felt drowned in the other. All in all a book that made me want to read more about Iran/Persia. By a different autho less
