review 1: Cleo Berry (17), believes Portland is safe distance away from the Spanish Influenza pandemic during World War I. When cases start popping up close to home and her boarding school becomes quarantined, she carelessly decides to head home. After hearing the pleading calls of the Red Cross, Cleo decides to volunteer. She begins going door-to-door to find anyone in need of medical attention. Slowly she gains a friend and falls for Edmund, a cute medical student. Can Cleo stay healthy while caring for the very sick or will her good luck run out?
review 2: When the Spanish Influenza of 1918 hits Portland, Cleo sneaks out of her quarantined boarding school, goes home to her empty and unsupervised house (her brother/guardian and his wife are travelling) and joins t
... morehe Red Cross to help victims. Before the epidemic, Cleo considered herself to be an "ordinary" girl, unsure of where her life was headed. Joining the RC and helping others opens her eyes to a whole new world filled with fear and death, but also friendship, love, and opportunity. Well written, well researched, and filled with characters that I truly cared about, I enjoyed this book very much - read it in less than 24 hours because I couldn't put it down. Gateway? Well, it's the dreaded historical fiction genre. A Death-Struck Year has similar themes, plot, and time period to the popular In the Shadow of Blackbirds, but unlike the latter, this book doesn't have the paranormal hook so I don't think it will have the same appeal. If Shadow makes Gateway this year, I'll recommend this one for the Read Down. We'll see . . . less
