review 2: I found the stories of the individual women dull and found myself putting it down frequently before I realized I just didn't like the book. When I decided not to finish it, I read the last chapter, about Natasha, the woman who brought all the women together. I loved her story because it was about Jewish people, WWII, foreign places and languages and emigration. I read this book for the Spanish Book Club and therefore took some notes. They follow:1) Francisca (the first woman mentioned):Her mom loved Francisca's brother, who died. Francisca couldn't get her mother's attention, much less love, so she grew up tortured. When the mother left the father, she left a note of good-bye for the father and didn't even mention Francisca.2) Mane:The only bad thing in her life was that her husband died. In her older years, she felt blessed that she'd loved and been loved at least once. She also discusses the effects of aging: wrinkles, not being able to do things, etc. She was a beautiful actress in her youth.3) Juana:Tenia una madre que le llamo "the obrera achocolatada". Me gusta la expresion. Me divierta decirla. Juana got depressed cuz she had to take care of elderly mother and bipolar daughter. She said something about her Greek man, which I thought was Francisca's man.4) Simona:Was one of the first femenistas. When she and mom were in a car accident, Simona said something off-color. Her mother, rather than asking if Simona was OK or something else about the accident, the mother told Simona to get out of the car because of the off-color word. Simona became a leftist and lost her Catholic faith. She married a man who got scholarship in NC, had a child, but later divorced and came bsck to Chile. She was with her second husband 20 years, Octavio, who watched TV (games) too much. She decided she wouldn't give up her self-respect just to stay with him.5) Natasha:me intereso que la educacion era el gran estandarte y la herramienta para progresar en la vida.
