review 1: These is a later book of a series. I haven't read the earlier books, but I don't think its really necessary to. I don't think that I'll go back and read them, actually. I did like this book - it hit all my 'spots': England, large extended family, country living, etc. I liked all the characters and understood motivations and all that. But there is a sense of forboding that permeates the book that is never fulfilled. Everyone is dreading something nebulously BAD and there is even something that seems definitely sinister going on and nothing comes of any of it. I was GLAD of the happy ending, of course, but I wondered why the author stressed the mystery so much. It seemed manufactured, somehow. Maybe if I'd read the earlier books, it would have made more sense t... moreo me.
review 2: A novel which continues the Chadwick saga trilogy, written some years previously. 'The Prodigal Wife' takes place about ten years after the end of 'Winning Through'. It mainly features Jolyon, whom we last saw as a rather hurting and confused teenager. He's now a young man on the brink of falling in love. His mother, cause of so much pain in his life has been bereaved and is beginning to re-think her priorities. Meanwhile some new characters are introduced too; and we catch up in the lives of old friends living in 'The Keep'. Although this is a standalone novel it's best read after the earlier books in the series since there would otherwise be rather an overwhelming number of people and situations.Not quite as special as I had hoped - I loved the original Chadwick trilogy! - but still most welcome, enjoyable to read, and satisfying to have various loose ends now neatly in place. Recommended to anyone who has read the earlier books about the Chadwick family. less
