review 1: Borg was ingenious in folding into the novel some of the most potent insights of his scholarship into the historical Jesus and his nonfiction work on the heart of a transformative, parabolic Christianity. The book was so autobiographical that I had to wonder whether Borg, like Martin Erikson in the book, had an affair in his late thirties with a student, and then later married her, with his new wife becoming an Episcopal priest? I await a sequel with alacrity.
review 2: My enjoyment of this didactic novel was enhanced by the fact that I had recently read a couple other or his nonfiction books; this novel was a bit like an interesting review of those readings. For readers interested in Borg's theology, this would not be my first recommendation; I would first
... morerecommend "The Heart of Christianity" where you can really get to the heart of the theology that is woven through out this novel. In "Putting Away Childish Things" it was interesting to read answers to students' questions; the same questions I might have as I read Marcus Borg's books. If I was basing my rating purely on the novel, it would not rate this high; but as it enhanced my earlier reading, "I really liked it".A couple quotes: "The opposite of faith as trust...is anxiety...The opposite of faith as trust is not doubt or skepticism or unbelief, but anxiety, worry, and fear...faith as trust progressively dimenishes anxiety and at its deepest level casts it out." -p.330 (from H. Richard Niebuhr's "The Responsible Self". And the poem by Denise Levertov illustrating the meaning of 'faith':As swimmers dareto lie face to the skyand water bears them,as hawks rest upon air and air sustains them;so would I learn to attain freefall, and floatinto Creator Spirit's deep embraceknowing no effort earnsthat all-surrounding grace. less

Marcus Borg is an excellent biblical scholar. He is not a novelist.

I enjoyed the story but it was a bit too "didactic".
