review 1: A testament, honest and true, to the efforts of the Amistad captives. Well researched, evidenced by copious notes, without a trace of repetition of message. The people of the Amistad - from the stolen to the slavers - are portrayed with the utmost attention to whatever intrinsic moral values they held. We know who won (rightfully so), and all stories are told within the context of the righteous and with attention to their struggle. A good book, well written, and if you want to know more than the movie of these folks' desire to go home, here is a good book to show the efforts they made to just be themselves in a place where they were most comfortable.
review 2: I've quarreled with Professor Rediker and his neo-Marxist interpretation of history, but here I believ
... moree he has done admirable service. By highlighting the social conflict aspect of the Amistad rebellion, Rediker has put the slaves back into their proper role as rebels against tyranny. He also shows how the slaves told their own story, seizing the public imagination and revitalizing the abolition movement from below. Where it had been mostly middle-class reformers, it began to take on popular characteristics. The story of Cinque and his enslaved fellows striking back against their oppressors actually motivated the working class to support them. At times, Rediker over-emphasized the Africans' agency, making it seem as if they were more responsible than they probably were (and his annoying tendency to spend the first part of every chapter recapping was kind of a drag), but coupled with a more traditional story, this volume give the full story of the Amistad rebels. less

A critically important moment in history, told with passion and backed up with excellent research.
