review 1: I enjoyed Margaret Klaw’s Keeping it Civil: The Case of the Pre-nup and the Porsche and Other True Accounts From the Files of a Family Lawyer much more than I expected to. I received a free copy to review and was mildly interested when I first opened the cover. I was surprised to find that I was immediately engrossed into the book – not just interested, but I wanted to keep reading and turning pages, which is of course the sign of a good book. Klaw, an award-winning lawyer from Pennsylvania, is not at all your stereotyped “snake oil” lawyer. She is kind, caring, clearly passionate about her job, and an endless advocate for her clients. On top of that, and perhaps more appealing, she is empathetic to the core, often identifying with her clients in ways that lea... mored her into emotional extremes. She is also quite liberal, as we see from her stance on women’s rights and gay marriage, among other things. I didn’t really understand what family law entailed when I started reading Keeping it Civil. What is most interesting is that Klaw works day in and out with basic human issues that we can all relate to – marriage, divorce, love, adultery, children and custody battles. Clients come to her in their times of deep need and emotional turmoil and she helps them sort out the often soap opera-esque situations they find themselves in. The book is organized into individual court cases that Klaw intersperses with clear, concise interpretation of the law and her own commentary. Interspersed through the book is a divorce trial/custody case that Klaw breaks down and analyses in segments called “the anatomy of a trial.” Also interesting are the ways in which family law changes with our changing political climate. Klaw explains, for example, the difficulty gay couples have in divorcing each other, an issue she calls “divorce equality.” Fascinating read and highly recommended.
review 2: Well written and informative. Took my time as wanted to think about material presented. Author deals with a variety of situations with a practical approach to problems presented by each case. Highly recommend for anyone wishing to learn more about subjects covered. Received from Goodreads as winner which did not influence my review.Have added to my read again list and have recommended to family members. less

It's probably my fault that I didn't like this book. I thought it was going to be funny. It's not.
