review 1: Think this was better than the previous two (so three and a half stars, really). This story takes place in the summer and with an archaeological dig as part of the background. Good at capturing the atmosphere of the Gotland at this time of year, and with lots of background information about the history and description of the island lightly imparted. The murders which take place are gruesome (and the childbirth which takes place in this book is also rather graphically described). It could be read without having read the predecessors in the series - there is a bit of back story to the irritating Emma and the journalist Johan but it is explained in the book. A lot of the significant events in the lives of the main characters in the series takes place between the books (so the... more last one ended with Emma apparently having made one decision, but with Johan turning up on her doorstep on Christmas Day, and the hint that things might be different. Now it is several months later, in the summer, and Emma's decision has changed). There is a bit of a cliffhanger at the end of the book regarding these two.
review 2: The third book in the Inspector Anders Knutas series, "The Inner Circle" by Mari Jungstedt is a perfect example of Nordic noir at its finest. I had not read the first two Knutas novels, but I still didn't have any problems jumping in mid-stream. The prose of the book flows nicely and this may be a credit to the translator as much as anything. The mystery surrounds a couple of brutal murders of archeologists on a dig and some very strange mutilations of horses on the Swedish island Gotland. I liked Inspector Knutas as a character, even though he does not seem as troubled as other Scandinavian detectives. Mari Jungstedt weaves an interesting story and I think I will try some of her other novels. less

Also known as Unknown, and really interesting about Gotland - made me want to visit.
