review 1: A Swedish mystery. The book is the fourth in the series and features ongoing characters police superintendent Anders Knutas and reporter Johan Berg. The story takes place on the island, Gotland. The people in the town awaken to the body of the local art dealer, Egon Wallin, hanging from the wall of the city. Suicide is ruled out when the evidence confirms that the victim was killed elsewhere and his body taken to Baman Gate to be displayed. Before Wallin's killer is found, two more influential members of the Swedish art world die mysteriously. The story is well written, the characters well developed. Th reader knows of the killer through chapters devoted to his thoughts and feelings about what he is doing
review 2: Mari Jungstedt again takes us to the island of
... more Gotland near Stockholm, and once again there is... murder. "Killer's Art" (the fourth in her Ander Knutas series) opens with well-known Visby art dealer, Egon Wallin, preparing for a new exhibition that includes paintings by new artist, Mattis Kalvalis. By the end of the evening a feeling of joy set in as he, his wife, and friends celebrated the show's success with dinner and drinks; the very satisfied Egon Wallin anticipated signing an exclusive contract with Kalvalis the following day. But as most others are heading to bed, Wallin leaves his home and walks out into the cold winter's night. As daylight comes to Visby, Siv Eriksson, on her way to work, discovers Egon Wallin's body hanging from the grating above Dalman Gate. And before Anders Knutas and his team bring the case to a close, a famous paiting is stolen, two more bodies turn up, and the search is on for a kidnapped baby. I so very much enjoy reading books from a series. After two or three visits with the main characters, they become friends and you begin to anticipate their habits and to care about what they think and how they feel. Mari Jungstedt's characters are well developed, and she has a keen sense for each one of them. Her writing allows us to tap into those thoughts and feelings. "Killer's Art" also introduced me to some Scandanavian art and artists, and I was soon investigating the history of Nils Dardel's "The Dying Dandy." This is an entertaining story with well-developed characters in a setting I'd very much like to visit... without the threat of murder, however. less
